Die Bucht von Medulin war in der Zeit von der Mitte des 1. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. bis zum 7. Jahrhundert n. Chr. ein wichtiger Ort für das Leben und die wirtschaftliche Tätigkeit aller Bevölkerungsschichten. Die wirtschaftliche Tätigkeit umfasste den Anbau, die Verarbeitung und die Lagerung landwirtschaftlicher Erzeugnisse (Getreide, Obst, Gemüse, Olivenanbau) sowie die Gewinnung von Salz, Olivenöl und Fisch.

Das Gebiet des Medulin-Golfs ist besonders interessant, da es sich um Anwesen handelt, die der senatorischen Elite gehörten. Gerade aufgrund dieser Eigentumsstruktur handelt es sich nicht ausschließlich um Wirtschaftsgüter, sondern auch um luxuriöse Landgüter bzw. maritime Villen, die ihren Besitzern auch als Ort der Erholung und für längere Aufenthalte dienten. 

In dieser Monografie konzentriert sich die Autorin auf die wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftsgeschichtlichen Aspekte der Existenz und Funktion dieser Villen und analysiert sorgfältig und fundiert alle bekannten Daten, sowohl aus schriftlichen und epigraphischen Quellen als auch aus Feldforschungen. 


From the mid-1st century B.C. to the 7th century A.D., Medulin Bay was an important center of life and economic activity for people of all social classes. Economic activity included the cultivation, processing, and storage of agricultural products (grains, fruits, vegetables, and olives), as well as the production of salt, olive oil, and fish. The Medulin Gulf area is particularly interesting because it consists of estates that belonged to the senatorial elite. Precisely because of this ownership structure, these were not merely economic assets but also luxurious country estates or maritime villas that served their owners as places of recreation and for extended stays. In this monograph, the author focuses on the economic and socio-historical aspects of the existence and function of these villas and carefully and thoroughly analyzes all known data, drawn from both written and epigraphic sources as well as field research.
