Exhibition Catalogue “Kykladitisses: Untold stories of women in the Cyclades”,
Volume II: Essays on the artefacts of the exhibition – Bilingual Edition

The second volume of the catalogue of the exhibition “Kykladitisses: Untold stories of women in the Cyclades” offers an extensive and academically documented presentation of artefacts that shed light on the unknown stories of women of the Archipelago from the Neolithic period to the 19th century AD. In 960 pages, the artefacts are thematically presented through detailed descriptions by archaeologists, historians and expert scholars.

This volume complements the first and includes rich photographic material, not only of the objects but also of the exhibition itself, offering a vivid picture of the process of its installation and the spaces in which its 12 sections are structured. This is the first archaeological catalogue to document photographically the entire installation of an exhibition, which makes it a unique example of exhibition documentation in Greece.

It is a valuable scholarly bilingual work, in Greek and English, which is addressed not only to specialists but also to the public, helping the reader to understand the multiple roles, position, rights and limitations of the woman of the Cyclades over the centuries. The catalogue is expected to become a reference for Cycladic research in the coming years.

In its earliest phase (8th century BC), the settlement primarily served residential purposes. The founders of this settlement came from the island of Paros. Its heyday dates to the 6th century BC, when around 550 BC, with the city of Paros playing a leading role, a monumental temple dedicated to Apollo was constructed. The site gradually emerged as one of the largest Cycladic religious centres of the Archaic period, its wealth and size in the 6th century BC comparable only to the sanctuary of Apollo on Delos. From the early years of the excavation, finds – mainly vessels bearing inscriptions with his name – had confirmed Apollo as the deity worshipped at this important sanctuary. This album follows the completion of the restoration of the Archaic Building Δ and complements a series of publications that introduced the treasures of Despotiko to the general public.

Upon returning to their homelands, they published their diaries or the letters they sent to friends or relatives, thus giving us the opportunity to learn about the life, customs, and economic conditions of the inhabitants of Mykonos, the fate of the antiquities of Delos, and the prehistoric relics of Renia during the years 1600 to 1900 A.D.
