The landscape of the Southeast Peloponnese (Laconia, Greece), a very
important region of the Empire in the context of the late Byzantine
period, was comprised of important bishopric centers, such as Mistra
and Monemvasia, as well as numerous villages, powerful monastic
foundations, and smaller hermitages frequently built in caves and
isolated settings. Grounded both on systematic fieldwork and detailed
surveys of the monuments, this book is the first comprehensive study
of the eremitical and monastic landscapes of the region.
It investigates the
interactions of isolated hermits and established communities, the
relationships of large monasteries to smaller foundations, and the
interweaving of monastic and rural economies. It aims at identifying
the monks themselves, their preoccupations and aspirations, which are
reflected not only by the choice of the patron saints of the holy
places they founded or the content of the painted decoration but also
by the choice of location or a deep relationship with natural
elements of the landscape.

The measurement of time in archaeology has always been fundamental.
The refining of chronologies has been intertwined with archaeological
science since its inception. In archaeology, as in other aspects of
life, chronology is important because the exact order in which events
occur helps us understand the cause and the effect of those events,
and thereby allow us to step back and view the "big picture"
of history - how and why events unfold in the way they do, and how
they are related. Chronology can also help us on the “micro”
scale, providing us with insight into everyday lives of settlements,
households and even one time life events, like burials.

Archaeological sites and monuments are integral parts of their
respective environments. As human societies have constantly adapted
to and changed their environments, archaeological sites also reflect
this principle. In this volume, the authors explore three different
themes: the management and protection of sites and monuments as
habitats for flora and fauna, the understanding of archaeology and
biodiversity (both historic and present), as well as the
organizational and legal framework necessary for accomplishing a more
integrated approach towards nature and heritage conservation.

Europe’ Series, represents the proceedings of the session #196:
"No man travels alone, he takes himself along: Yamnaya transmission
and/or transformation during the 3rd millennium BC Europe" held at
the Budapest EAA Virtual Meeting in 2020. The session was
co-organised by the editors of this volume together with colleagues
Todor Valchev from the Yambol Regional Historical Museum (Bulgaria)
and Piotr Włodarczak from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology
of the Cracow branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland). The
session aimed to focus on archaeological approaches to material
culture and ritual practices to explore how steppe transmissions
unfolded during the 3rd millennium BC.The volume presents
the work of 25 researchers from various European countries, Japan,
and the United States, united in 11 articles. The themes discussed
cover a large portion of the European continent, from the Lower Don
steppes in the east to Northern Central Europe in the west, and a
time span of approximately two millennia. The research presented
opens new perspectives on micro-regional traits, regional
particularities, and supra-regional complexities of steppe
transmissions in the 4th and 3rd millennia BC.

Humans are wired for storytelling. We continually construct our
identities and define our sense of belonging through narratives.
They help us make sense of the past and serve as a frame of reference
for understanding the present. On 12 and 13 September 2019, students
and post-docs from the UK, Poland, Czech Republic, and Germany met at
the University of Leipzig to discuss how archaeology contributes to
these processes and, thereby, the overall understanding of what it
means to be human. The participants addressed this topic from a
variety of perspectives by highlighting, for example, the role of
archaeological epistemology, examining the systematics of
explanations in prehistoric archaeology, and exchanging experiences
regarding the communication between the scientific community and the
public. Unanimously, the contributions illustrate the importance of a
reflective and transparent engagement with the processes of
knowledge production and narration in archaeology.

Heike Krause et al.,Beim Rochusmarkt. Vom Langhaus zum Postamt in 7000 Jahren (Wien Archäologisch 15)Wien 2023ISBN 978-3-85161-296-7160 S./pp., zahlr. Farbabb./num. colour figs., 22 x 14 cm, broschiert/softcover
Das Gebiet um den Rochusmarkt im 3. Wiener Gemeindebezirk birgt Spuren
So gelang
