The authors address the issue of the translation of political power and the legitimacy of rule over the civilized world from antiquity to the early modern period, focusing on the image of the elephant and its role in triumphal iconography. The elephant is thus recognized as a proper imago triumphalis – the most obvious, most universal, and at the same time, the most easily comprehensible symbol of the idea of translatio. Through the analysis and interpretation of the use of this specific motif across several millennia of human history, a complex historical topic is made approachable and understandable, even to a wider audience.
