Yelyzaveta I. Akhypova, Icons from the 10th–13th centuries in Stone, Bone and Ceramics from Ukraine.A catalogueCluj – Napoca 2025ISBN 978-606-020-907-2256 S./pp., Farb- und S/W-Abb./colour and b/w-figs., 28 x 22 cm; kartoniert/hardcover This book is devoted to a very special circle of works that have reached us from the art of Kyiv Rus of the late 10th-11th centuries, and from the artistic heritage of those principalities, which after the collapse of the vast Kyiv state were formed in the southern and south-western parts of its territory. These principalities continued to exist in the 12th-13th centuries, until the invasion of the Tatar-Mongol hordes in 1230-40s, i.e. in the pre-Mongol period, and partly survived in the following decades. When it comes to the artistic culture of that vast world, we usually remember, first of all, the ecclesiastical architecture, the mosaics and the frescoes of the churches of Kyiv and Chernihiv, the enormous 11th-century icons of Novgorod, made, apparently, by artisans then visiting Kyiv, the miniatures of the 1056-57 Ostromir Lectionary, the decorations of other outstanding illustrated manuscripts, as well as the precious gold and silver jewelry, decorated with cloisonné enamel and other exquisite methods of jewelry art. The monumental sculpture also existed in that world: carvings in white stone (limestone) on the facades of some churches, narrative and ornamental plastic of certain interior elements such as remarkable reliefs(both patterned and narrative) on the slate slabs that decorated Kyiv’s churches. However, monumental sculpture and relief played relatively a modest role in that artistic world. This assessment of the role of sculpture will not change much even if we recall the existence of wooden sculpture, the art inherited from pagan times and known to us from the few surviving relatively late works of the north-east and north-west of Rus, which being largely primitive in nature have reached us only in small numbers due to the poor preservation of the material employed. (Foreword by Engelina Smirnova).

Constantinos M. Constantopoulos, Byzantine Lead Seals – The Stamoules’ Collection(Siatras Numismatic Studies, 10)Athens 2023ISBN 978-628-5818-00-5 108 S./pp., zahlr. S/W-Abb./num. b/w-figs., 23,5 x 16 cm; broschiert/softcoverAnastasios Stamoules was a Greek born in 1843 at the small town of Selymbria, Eastern Thrace, then a part of the Ottoman Empire. He studied in the Orthodox College of the Oecumenical Patriarchate at Constantinople. From very young age, he had started collecting objects relating to the history of Thrace. As a result a huge collection of Greek, Roman and Byzantine objects was formed. Unfortunately the biggest part of this collection was stolen by the troops of the Allies during WW I. The forced population displacement of the 1920's lead the whole family in Athens. In 1924 Stamoules donated the coins and the lead seals that managed to bring with him to the Numismatic Museum. This book presents in detail the Byzantine lead seals of Stamoules' Collection. What is important is that all seals were locally collected, at the small area around Selymbria, one could justifiably call it "the Selymbria Collection". The Byzantine city was an important strategic settlement located in the interior of the Long Walls of Thrace, at the end of Via Egnatia, it also was a religious centre, as is still obvious from the remains of many churches that survive. It is mentioned in the sources as an archdiocese and later as a metropolis. Therefore the seals of the Collection can also be used as a primary material for historical studies.

Turhan Kaçar,The Council of Nicaea. A Political and Intellectual History Ankara 2025 ISBN 978-975-17-6402-7258 S./pp., zahlr. Farb- und S/W-Abb./num. colour and b/w-figs., 24 x 17 cm; kartoniert/hardcover The Council of Nicaea stands as one of the most decisive turning points in the history of Christianity. Yet, within Turkish historical scholarship, it has long remained a largely neglected subject - articularly when considered through the lenses of Roman political history and ancient intellectual history. To date, the council has not been examined as an independent topic within these frameworks. The limited number of studies that do address Nicaea neither offer a comprehensive historical narrative nor evaluate the council’s textual production from an intellectual-historical perspective. As a result, Turkish historiography continues to fall short not only in answering fundamental questions – such as what actually transpired at the Council of Nicaea, how debates were conducted, and how its decisions were interpreted and reinterpreted across subsequent centuries and cultures – but also in providing the historical context necessary to pose these questions in the first place. This collective volume seeks to address this gap. By offering a coherent and interdisciplinary discussion of the Council of Nicaea and its broader political, theological, and intellectual dimensions, the book aims to make a modest yet meaningful contribution to Turkish scholarship on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the council.

Aleksandar N. Brzić, Hallmarking of Gold Coinage in Serbia and Yugoslavia 1882–1941(Schriften der Österreichischen Forschungsgesellschaft für Numismatik, Band 1)Wien 2024ISBN 978-3-9504268-7-8248 S./pp., zahlr. Abb./num. figs., 30 x 21,5 cm; kartoniert/hardcover Between 1882 and 1941, Kingdoms of Serbia and Yugoslavia hallmarked a great amount of gold coinage. This somewhat peculiar practice was regulated by law and executed by state offices using several hallmarks, some of which are properly documented and presented here for the first time. The author describes not only the development of the hallmarking practice itself, but also its historic and ethnographic backgrounds, in particular the use of gold ducats in the ethnic jewellery of the region. Based mainly on his former collection, fully presented here in high-quality colour photographs, this book, again for the first time, provides a full catalogue of all hallmarks used in different assay offices and all hallmarked gold coins known to the author.
