Originally conceived as "The Roman Army and Military Cults on the Territory of Croatia”, this study was redefined due to the historical complexity of the region, which spans portions of Roman Dalmatia, southern Pannonia, and the Istrian peninsula. To ensure a coherent geographical framework, the focus was narrowed to the area historically understood as Illyricum in the 1st century AD, concentrating specifically on inscriptions from the province of Dalmatia and regions south of the Drava River.

The research examines military religion through an analysis of 306 votive inscriptions erected by soldiers. While numerous statues and statuettes related to cult practice exist, these were excluded from the study, as a definitive connection to soldiers or military cults could not be established with certainty.

The inscribed material is organized into a catalogue divided into 25 categories according to the deity honored: Jupiter, Jupiter and other deities, Liber, Silvanus, Hercules, Mithras, Mars, Fortuna, Diana, the Nymphs, the Genii, Nemesis, Apollo, Neptune, Asclepius and Hygieia, Venus, Ianus, Victoria, Somno, Hermes, Minerva, Ceres, Dea Coryphea, Epona, and the emperors. Additionally, finds of weapons recovered from rivers have been considered, given the strong possibility that many were deposited as votive offerings by soldiers.
