Mai 2024 veranstalteten Symposium „Landwirtschaft in Anatolien von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart“ gehalten wurden. Das Werk behandelt ein breites Themenspektrum, darunter Ernährungsgewohnheiten im Laufe der Jahrhunderte, verkohlte Samenproben, archäobotanische Analysen, landwirtschaftliche Technologien, Anbau- und Lagerungsprozesse, Handelsgüter, gesetzliche Regelungen zu diesen Produkten sowie interregionale Handelsnetzwerke. In diesem Rahmen zielt das Buch darauf ab, das landwirtschaftliche Erbe Anatoliens von der Vergangenheit bis zur Gegenwart aus einer vielschichtigen Perspektive zu untersuchen und aktuelle Forschungen auf diesem Gebiet sichtbar zu machen. Die in dem Buch enthaltenen Studien dokumentieren nicht nur die historische Entwicklung Anatoliens, sondern bewerten auch umfassend die langwierigen landwirtschaftlichen Prozesse, die sich über die Epochen Ägyptens, Mesopotamiens, Griechenlands, Lydiens, Phrygiens, Roms, Byzanz’ und des Osmanischen Reiches erstrecken. Die „Pionierleistungen“ der anatolischen Landwirtschaft und die originären Erkenntnisse zu diesem Bereich werden im Lichte der Daten zur materiellen Kultur diskutiert; auf diese Weise wird eine ganzheitliche Perspektive auf die Agrargeschichte der Region geboten.


This book contains selected papers from the presentations delivered at the symposium “Agriculture in Anatolia from Antiquity to the Present,” organized by VEKAM at Koç University from May 13 to 15, 2024. The work covers a broad range of topics, including dietary habits over the centuries, charred seed samples, archaeobotanical analyses, agricultural technologies, cultivation and storage processes, trade goods, legal regulations governing these products, and interregional trade networks. Within this framework, the book aims to examine Anatolia’s agricultural heritage from the past to the present from a multifaceted perspective and to highlight current research in this field. The studies included in the book not only document the historical development of Anatolia but also comprehensively evaluate the long-term agricultural processes spanning the eras of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Lydia, Phrygia, Rome, Byzantium, and the Ottoman Empire. The “pioneering achievements” of Anatolian agriculture and the original insights into this field are discussed in light of data on material culture; in this way, a holistic perspective on the region’s agricultural history is offered. Sinope, an ancient town of glorious past, had structures embellished with exquisite, colorful mosaics surviving from Roman times, under the modern housing. The Mosaics feature representations of mythological themes and personifications, as well as colorful carpets of geometric ornamentation. The present manuscript on Sinop Province Mosaics, from nine different sites, investigates artistic trends and styles, authentic features peculiar to the Sinopean mosaicists, and inquires whether any trace of the influence of other mosaic centers exists. The manuscript contains color pictures of the mosaics and displays mosaic fragments in restituted illustrations.
