This volume presents the results of a workshop focused on Athens and broadens the perspective to include insights from Aegina and Syracuse.
Sixteen essays and an introductory chapter examine innovations and inventions in the fields of style (particularly sculpture), the technology, use, and design of ceramics, architecture and urban planning, theater and commemorative practices, as well as changes in visual storytelling and in the Athenians’ self-image during the period from approximately 530 to 470 B.C. The innovations that mark the end of the Archaic period and the beginning of the Classical period are generally interpreted not as a break but as manifestations of a gradual transition.
