Farb- und S/W-Abb./num. colour and b/w-figs., 28,5 x 20 cm; kartoniert/hardcoverenglisch mit ausführlicher Zusammenfassung in bulgarischenglish with extended summary in bulgarian The present study is dedicated to some of the finds from a type of archaeological structures that are specific to the Classical and Hellenistic necropolis of Apollonia: the so-called "ritual fireplaces". These are remains of rituals carried out in the necropolis and related to food consumption or offerings and libations for the dead. Ritual fireplaces are usually discovered between the graves, most often next to stone walls and other structures delimiting burials or groups of burials. The repertoire of finds from the ritual fireplaces comprises mainly pottery: mostly black-glaze and plain vases, rarely painted (red-figure) ones. The shapes are mainly for serving food. Less represented are terracotta figurines, metal items, funerary wreaths, etc. It should be emphasized that the scope of the present study is modest: it analyzes only 45 out of hundreds of ritual fireplaces investigated in the necropolis of Apollonia in the last three decades. The analysis of several dozen fireplaces aims to partially fill a gap in the existing literature dealing with black-glaze pottery from the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The monography comprises an introduction and three main chapters: Chapter I. Black-glaze pottery from the ritual fireplaces in the necropolis of Apollonia: Types and chronology, Chapter II. Catalogue of the black-glaze pottery with a commentary on the context (some 400 vases from investigations in Kalfata, Budzhaka, and Mesarite localities), and Chapter III. Other pottery. The conclusion discusses specific and the general problems of the pottery in the fireplaces, problems of chronology, and an attempt to bind archaeological evidence with historical processes.

Links between Coin Dies and Chronology of Issues BIBLIOGRAPHY CATALOG The present work is dedicated to the most valuable and representative numismatic monuments, a dream and pride for every museum and collector – the gold staters of the ancient Greek colony of Pantikapaion (now the city of Kerch), issued in the 4th century BC and the autonomous gold staters of the West Pontic cities issued in the Early Hellenistic Period. The book consists of two parts. The first part covers the golden staters of the Western Pontic cities: Mesambria, Odessa, Callatis, Tomis and Istros. The second part is dedicated to the most expensive gold staters in the numismatic world, those of the Greek colony Pantikapaion, issued in the 4th century BC. The presence of gold coinage in these cities is indisputable evidence of their importance and prosperity during the Late Classical and Early Hellenistic Periods. Each of the two parts is presented with a separate catalogue. All staters known and available to the author from museums and private collections, from auction catalogues and internet pages have been published. In the proposed catalogues, the examined coins are systematized by chronology, the numbers of the obverse and reverse stamps, their full metric parameters, the position of the stamps in relation to the coin core, the current location of each specimen and the publication in which the respective mint was first mentioned are identified and indicated. All specimens included in the catalogues are illustrated with color photographs in real size. Where possible, the last known price at which the specimen was sold is also indicated.

Kahya, Tarkan – Tuğçe Akbaytoğan : A predecessor & two successors
Tarkan Kahya – Tuğçe Akbaytoğan (eds.), A predecessor & two successors. Halil Edhem Eldem, Aziz Ogan, Arif Müfid Mansel. Regarding the three deceased directors of Istanbul Archaeological Museums who crossed paths(Turkish Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Institute publications, 025)Istanbul 2022ISBN 978-625-7922-36-4164 S./pp., zahlr. Farbabb./num. colour-figs., 27 x 20 cm; broschiert/softcover This book, prepared by Tarkan Kahya and Tuğçe Akbaytogan, deals with the long institutional history of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, especially the transition period from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic. Considering that the majority of the works on our museum history have solely focused on Osman Hamdi Bey, that is, the “foundation period” of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, it is clear how important a study that tackles the history of the museum after Osman Hamdi Bey, in the light of documents from the institution’s archive. In the first part of A Predecessor & Two Successors, the early history of Istanbul Archaeological Museums is examined around the concept of predecessors, and the well- known establishment phase of the museum is explained. In the aftermath of Osman Hamdi Bey’s passing, we are witnessing the “Organization Period”, that is, the term of Halil Edhem (Eldem) – Osman Hamid’s right-hand and brother, and successor – in the museum. In the second part on “Successors”, which started with the departure of Osman Hamdi Bey and his brother from the management of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, we delve into the works of Aziz Ogan, who was the successor after Halil Edhem Bey, who have further developed the organization in the institution. Lastly, we learn about the life and works of Arif Müfid Mansel, who chose Istanbul University over the museum.

Öniz, Hakan : Underwater Archaeology in Türkiye
Hakan Öniz (eds.), Underwater archaeology in Türkiye(Turkish Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Institute publications, 019)Istanbul 2022ISBN 978-625-7922-42-5240 S./pp., zahlr. Farbabb./num. colour-figs., 27 x 20 cm; kartoniert/hardcover With its 8500 kilometers of coastline stretching from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea, Turkey constitutes one of the most important geographies in the history of civilization. The maritime phenomenon was discovered tens of thousands of years ago on these coasts, where people have lived for hundreds of thousands of years. Paleolithic remains found in Karain and Beldibi Caves in Antalya and Keldağ-Üçağızlı Caves in Hatay suggest that people who went to Crete and Cyprus, were from Anatolia, the closest coast. More than a thousand obsidian tools of Nevşehir origin, dating back at least ten thousand years, were found in the Northern Cyprus Tatlısu-Çiftlikdüzü excavations. People provided the transportation between the islands and the mainland with primitive sea vehicles. The most concrete example of this type of vehicle emerged in Anatolia, and wooden canoe paddles dated 8000 years ago were found in Istanbul Yenikapı. It is not surprising that the world’s oldest ships are found in such a geography. In Antalya, the Gelidonya Shipwreck dated to 1200 BCE was found in 1960, the Kaş-Uluburun shipwreck dated to the 14th century BCE in 1984, and the Kumluca shipwreck, which dates back to 16-15th BCE centuries in 2018. Both the shores of these seas and lakes & streams have witnessed the existence of many known and unknown cultures and their relations with each other for a long time. The seas separating Asia, Europe, and Africa simultaneously connected these continents through maritime means. Today, investigating these unknowns under the water is carried out within the framework of the discipline of Underwater Archaeology. Turkey is among the leading countries in the world both in the academic field and in the framework of underwater excavations and researches. This book has been prepared in order to put all the major studies done in Turkey on the map.
