This book investigates the interests behind the Athenians’ worship of their main goddess on the Acropolis as a cult community. It ranges chronologically from the appearance of votives for the goddess in the early 8th century B.C. to the completion of her latest temple at the end of the 5th century B.C. The study focuses on the following issues:

  1. The formation of the sanctuary with the eight temples that were planned or built on the plateau over the course of three centuries.
  2. The images that the cult community made of their goddess, especially the statues in the temples and the Promachos outdoors, innovations in iconography, and depictions of the goddess as a cult recipient.
  3. The festivals for Athena, and the tales and visual representations of both charter myths of Athens (the birth of Athena’s foster child from the earth and the defense of Athens against invaders). Both myths were retold in updated versions.

A diachronic chapter argues that the changes and innovations which can be observed in the course of the centuries are the consequences of a changing perspective on the goddess.
