The ten conference papers presented in this volume examine the development of streets, roads and squares in areas of settlement. The discussion looks both at the street concepts in urban planning and on the stratigraphic sequence of streets built up in predominantly ancient, Central European settlements, such as Cologne, Trier, Vindonissa, Bregenz, Carnuntum, St. Pölten and Vienna. Starting from antiquity, the collection also raises the question of the continuity of settlement structures, thereby spanning a timeline through the Middle Ages and up to the modern era. Furthermore, it provides insights into the latest methods for reconstructing archaeological sites, digitising old town plans, and analysing aerial photography and airborne laser scanning. This clearly demonstrates that it is possible to use these new technological advances to reassess earlier interpretations of archaeological findings.
